Plaster ceilings

Greeting All;
I have an old home with plaster ceiling that are cracked. I was wondering if I could stomp the ceiling with sheetrock mud after filling the cracks with plaster repair. The reason I want to stomp the ceilings is to keep from having to paint the ceiling, I would mix paint in with mud.
I was just concerned that the drywall mud would not stick to the plaster and fall off after time.
