Anyone have tips on learning hi-hat (using sticks) and kick independence?
Post Body

So I just started drumming at the end of last month, and enjoying it a lot. I've been using lots of forum posts and youtube videos to teach me shit but one thing I have trouble with and haven't found much info on is how to do more intricate kick patterns while keeping time on the hi-hat using my left or right arm. I can pull off a single kick at the same time my stick makes contact with the hat, and on the upbeat as well if I focus, but if I do anything like a double and a ghost note, my arm ends up copying my foot instead of continuing the regular quarter/eighth/sixteenth note pattern. Is this just something I have to burn into my muscle memory and it eventually will get better, or is there some practice methods I'm not aware of?
