My nephew is preparing to start auditioning for DCI because he wants to tour next summer (2023); he'll turn 16 during the tour. He's already 2nd chair trumpet in his high-school marching band, and he's just a freshman, so I think he's got a good chance of qualifying somewhere (and that's not just the proud uncle talking).
But he's really anxious about something that was a total non-issue to my generation: the lack of privacy in the showers while on tour. His dad has never been in the picture much, and my sister's boyfriends have shown only a tolerance of, never an interest in, him. I'm really the only older man who's consistently been there for him.
But he thinks I can't talk to him about this because, well, besides me being "so old", he knows I got used to the whole communal-shower-thingy through school sports, and he thinks it's "totally different" for athletes than it is for musicians. (Maybe it is: after all, I'm just a former dumb jock that traded in a chiseled physique for a dad bod decades ago.)
No one from his school has made DCI in over 15 years, so he doesn't know anyone personally that toured with DCI and survived those showers. I really think DCI would be the experience of a lifetime for him and I don't want him to miss out on it because of something like this. Is there anything I can say or do that can help him with this?
