Nail in tyre twice a year - unlucky or about average?

I do about 12,000 miles a year on average, driving in SE England and London. Over the last two years I’ve had 4 nails in tyres, with another today. Does anyone else get them this often, or am I just unlucky? (And where the heck do these nails come from, too?!)
