I need some drawing advice.

So I've recently been trying to improve my art and art style. I mainly draw people/human shaped characters. The way I find a little simple that i'I've been trying is the basic shape method were you draw the shapes and use them to form a human body. But every time I try drawing said body it ends up looking like oscar the grouch's house. Can anyone give some tips/pointers to help me improve??
