Last week, I was finishing up my last order of the night and a decent paying order came through. It was about $9 for 3 miles, into a very nice neighborhood on a golf course. The night was going well. Then as I was pulling into the restaurant, my phone was ringing with "DoorDash" as the caller ID. I didn't answer it, I was driving. As I turn in, the text messages started coming through.
You can see the entire interaction here. Started with an angry "cancel the order... its just sauce... my daughter did it." Then it quickly turned violent as you can see. Threatening to shoot any dasher that comes to the door. And then the final "I will kill tonight."
Holy crap, WTF. I immediately asked how f**king stupid are you. Only then did the app catch my foul language. But I immediately contacted support. I didn't want any dasher to pick up this order. Support was fairly helpful. They could see the conversation and the multiple phone call attempts. They banned him immediately, made sure I was safe, and gave me a reference number in case I wanted to call the police.
I didn't think the cops would do anything, so I didn't that night. I was more mad then scared at that point and went home.
I didn't sleep well and the next morning a few people told me to call the cops. So I did. The officer I talked to went by the address, which was incorrect in the app. The address given was 98 Road Name, but it took you to 14 Road Name at the end of a cul-de-sac, on a golf course and the house was still under construction. The cop was going to chalk it up to a scam and didn't go further with DoorDash but it's on record.
So it seems like it was a scam. I've see posts about ordering just a sauce and scamming the dashers that route. But to threaten to shoot someone was a escalation that shook me for a few days. I only dash part time, but I was super spooked.
I do go out protected. I am a woman too, so my head is always on a swivel. But be careful out there. Clearly not everyone is stable.
If you're that mad over sauce, just know my mom went to doordash some McDonald's and failed to order a meal. But instead paid $17 for only french fries and didn't throw any tables. I get technology is hard for older folks, but not to the point you need to get violent.
