Disclaimer: I've been dashing for two years on and off and this is what I've picked up. This is an honest review, I'm not getting paid for this.
Here's some tips for those considering to dash full time or even part time:
Don't come in expecting to make 1k each and every week. There is a possibility of making 1k each week but there are many variables that play into it.
Despite what the advertisment states, you cannot simply open the app and start dashing, ESPECIALLY if you do not live in a highly populated area. If the area is grayed out you will get a message saying "This area is not busy right now. Schedule yourself for a busier time."
You can either get paid daily or via direct deposit. If you are tight on cash, I would suggest being paid daily. But, you will get delivered a Dasher Card to use and they will set up an account for you.
Restaurants, especially locally owned can block you from receiving orders if you are rude to them in any sortve way. Be mindful of the mom and pop shops, they are doing their best.
For the love of all things unholy, read the damn delivery instructions. Your ratings are dependant on that. Plus, some people won't tip until after they've got their stuff delivered.
Communication is key. You want a higher rating, communicate with your customer. And also don't be a dick either, but that's common sense as well too. Also don't open the bag of food unless the customer tells you to. It's just gross and unprofessional.
In order to dash as often and whenever, especially when your area is grayed out, you must complete 100 active deliveries by the first of each and every month and continue to delivery 100 active deliveries. You must also have over an 84% or 85% delivery completion and either a 4.5 or 4.7 ratings and must keep it that high to become a "Top Dasher" (active deliveries means you did not decline an order, the order was not cancelled, etc. It was fully completed.)
Your biggest expense is your car, particularly gas. Depending on your tank, you will spend either 80 to 100 dollars in gas each and every week. Hence, getting paid daily comes in a clutch if you do not have any other source of income.
You will also spend a lot of time in your car and if there aren't many orders coming in, especially if you are not a top dasher as they have priority over everyone else, I would suggest bringing something along while you wait for orders. I personally bring a book, my sunglasses, a huge water bottle, and a portable charger for my phone.
I would suggest getting like a phone holder for your car so you're not constantly holding your phone while you're driving when looking at Google maps. (Speaking of google maps is your best friend)
Yes, you can dash anywhere in the states if door dash is available in the area that you are in.
Doordash will not send you a 1099 unless you make more than 600 within the previous tax year. Speaking of, you must pay your federal and local taxes considering that doordash does not take it out of your earnings. So if you dash and do not make 600, you must keep track of how much you've earned.
Doordash does not track your milage. You must track it for yourself. There are apps in the app store that you can download. I personally use stride.
If you need to take a break to get food, use the bathroom, etc you can pause your dash for 35 minutes. Once that 35 minutes is up, the dasher app will automatically end your dash.
If you live in a small area I personally don't recommend doordashing. Before doordash started to include more parts of smaller towns near each other, it was like a competition to be able to dash in that small town because when scheduling it's first come first serve. So most of the time people (myself included at one time) would travel to bigger cities to make a living. It's not worth the drive or the stress.
If you have the ability to either dash per order or dash per time, I would recommend dashing per time. Yes it's weird when you read the official website of them explaining, but at the end of the day you do not see how much someone tips you until after you completed the order. Basically, dashing per time is from the time you accept the order to the time you complete the order, you will get paid plus whatever commission is given. So for instance, in my area the per time is 17/per hour. Within that hour that I'm dashing, if I have three orders and they are 5 to 7 minutes from the store/restaurant I could potentially be making 17 an hour plus whatever tips is given. Per order is solely based off of the amount that tip is given.
You are your own boss at the end of the day. The amount of time you put into dashing is the amount that you get out of it.
Finally, not much of a tip but more of my personal opinion. Do I think it's worth it? Yes and no. I love the freedom that the app gives me, but there's a lot of uncertainties that come along with it. In the end, I would say do what's best for you.
I will try and answer any questions in the comments but that's about it for now. Stay safe out there
