Don't Starve Together won't launch

I have the Don't Starve Together Beta. When I try to launch it, the program opens, checks for updates and then gives me a "problem checking for latest version" message at the bottom of the window. I am then unable to play the game--it tries to log me in and then fails. Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to fix it?
