True story: when I was still in my teens, I got a part-time job at a local farm for their Halloween season. They had a haunted house set up in a barn and a haunted corn maze set up in the field. I was hired on as one of the spooks. They gave us a bucket of generic Halloween masks to choose from, not very original at all, so instead of settling for a generic Michael Myers roaming the corn maze, I instead created a custom character.
The thing about it is that everyone was going for the jump scare. Jump out from the corn and scare some people...and then what? We weren't allowed to touch the guests; we just stood there waving our arms like statues as they moved on to the following path. To me, that wasn't all that scary. So I went for psychological torture instead. I had a butcher's smock, a crazy white wig, and a lot of blood smeared on my face and clothes. I had a display counter filled with cow parts. Set up in the maze, and I would jump out from behind the counter. I was the mad butcher, there to make a deal.
"Ah, good! Fresh meat. Would you like a full body or just a part? Can I interest you in a juicy heart? Say, I'll trade you this spleen for your arm. Oh, you look tasty. Sell me the little one. Come back! This meat doesn't cost much... Just an arm and a leg!"
I aimed for the psychological torcher and was told my area of the maze was one of the most memorable...I wonder what the people in this group would have done if I had used the same sales pitch on you?
