Dog has a scab in back of ear

Our dog has started to act weird in which he started to shake his head excessively. He has also started to look up a lot like if has something on or in his ear but there’s nothing. We have found a scab behind ear. Currently a scab I believe or open but what could be causing this. I saw maybe ear mites or mites. But I don’t know.
