Having trouble figuring out when my new pup needs to potty

I just got a purebred German Shepherd, and hes very vocal...I know it's his 1st day away from his old owners and he's probably anxious, he does have anxiety issues I was told. He's 6 months old, and still uses pee pads, so far he's used 1, but he's peed outside 2 times and pooped once. I'm really worried he might poop in the house after I go to sleep and I'm about to go to bed in a couple hours, should I crate him at night for now? He whines pretty often, and I've spent most of today tiring him out outside and getting him a bit more acclimated to the home, but yeah...only 1 poop today so far and I've had him for 7 hours now. He's also a GSD, so like he sniffs at everything and is very floppy/all over the place, which makes this whole watching for signs he needs to go very confusing for me. I've had dogs before, but they never were this vocal/energetic.
