I have an 11.5-month-old Chow/Pitbull/Supermutt mix named Zeppa. She's spayed. I walk dogs in our neighborhood, and sometimes I bring them over to play with Zeppa. Zeppa plays really well with them, she just gets too excited for the older ones at times at I have to distract her. This isn't a problem. However, 3x I've noticed her resource guarding. Once, a beagle was interested in one of her squeaker toys, and Zeppa rammed herself into him and nipped at his heels to make him drop it. Next, a pittie mix sniffed at a treat Zeppa had left outside because she didn't really like it. Zeppa saw him sniff it, then ran up and took it from him and ate the whole thing. It was like a rawhide alternative chew strip thing. Then today, I gave her and her best friend (another pittie, she plays with him every week) half a doggie froyo and a few blueberries each. They had separate plates. Zeppa hasn't shown interest in this flavor of froyo before, nor has she liked blueberries. She sniffed her portion, then sniffed the pittie's, and when he sniffed her head because she was in his space, she snarled at him. He just walked away, he wasn't interested in the froyo. Then Zeppa ate all of the froyo, even though when I've offered it to her before she didn't like it. Whenever her friend walked by the blueberries, she would run up and try to eat them again, even though she just kept spitting them out.
Now, Zeppa is an only dog, and she's not resource aggressive with us humans. We can mess with her food while she's eating, and she loves us to play tug with her toys or chase her with a toy. When I give her and her best friend a normal treat, there's no issue. They'll each eat it and keep playing. Zeppa will sometimes walk away with hers if its bigger than a training treat, but that's it. I'm wondering if I should try to do training with her, or if this behavior is just because she's so young, and/or if I should just stick to giving them normal treats during playdates. What do y'all think? Have any of you had similar experiences?
