My partner and I adopted a 2.5 years old Samoyed girl three weeks ago from a local shelter where she was for about 2 months. She is the sweetest girl! When she arrived in the shelter, she was severely overweight (29 kg). She is down to 24 now, but still has to go down to 18-20 kg. Before we adopted her, we read up quite a bit on the breed. Everywhere it said that Samoyeds need lots of exercise, not only in walks, but also mental training and exercise. We walk her three times a day; the morning walks are usually 20-30 minutes, noon walks are everything from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, and evening walks are 30 minutes to an hour. During the walks, we do some basic training with her like 'come here', 'sit', and 2-3 sets of us throwing some of her kibble into the grass and have her look for it. We had the first trainer lesson last week, and were instructed to give her all her food with her training. Also, we should do all excitement outside, so that when she is at home, she knows that this is where she is supposed to relax and chill.
She seems really happy (and we sure are!), but also very exhausted. They told us at the shelter that it is normal that newly adopted dogs sleep a lot within the first two weeks, so we weren't too worried at the start, but are beginning to wonder about it now. You see, we are both not very experienced with dogs. My partner had a dog when he was a child/teen, but I was bitten as a child so I always kept my distance to dogs. This makes it tough for us to judge if she is exhausted, or simply comfortable sleeping and getting the "home is relax and chill" thing! She doesn't really do much at home other than sleep. Whenever we go near her, she just flops to her side or back and wants to be cuddled. When we are starting preparations to go outside, she grasps it right away and gets excited (doing the little tippity dance!) and is all for going out. We also had her checked up by a vet and got an all ok.
So, basically I am asking if this seems normal to the more experienced dog owners! We're not complaining about her being such a sleepyhead, in fact it makes things easier for us because we can do our stuff here at home without her constantly begging for attention, or being up to no good. We're just a tad worried if that is normal!
