[help] my dog is having trouble lifting his head

Last week my dog was not doing well. He wouldn't move and could hardly lift his head up. I know his legs were hurting because he was limping. I took him outside and he was just standing there with his nose on the ground, as if his head was too heavy to lift.
We ended up giving him a doggie aspirin and within an hour he was doing much better.
What could have happened? He is old (13 or 14). He's had leg pain before but I've never seen him to the head thing. He hasn't done it since.
