Post Body

So we have let our Beagle mix sleep with us on the bed almost every night, and sometimes she pees on it. She usually pees on the bed while we're in the bed. Also, she is three years old and I got her from s shelter 6 months ago. We know very little about her history. She also sometimes pees on the doormat, but I think she generally does that when she thinks she's signaled to us that she needs to go out and we didn't notice. We try to take her outside every 3-4 hours when we're home, or whenever we notice that she's walking around. She used to pee on the landing of the stairs, but no longer does. She also used to pee on a rug but stopped that. And she was also peeing on the Christmas tree skirt, but that is gone. She pees in the apartment 2-3 times a week I'd say, but it seems completely random when she does. I thought maybe it had to do with water intake after she's in the crate while we work. But I'll take her out after work and then again a couple hours later and she won't pee in between then. She also often pees in her crate while we are at work.

I personally think that maybe her crate is too big (got it from my mom), but what's stranger to me is that she doesn't even pee in the corner, she just pees right in the middle of the crate.

I think maybe the solution is just to not allow her on the bed anymore. I haven't tried the "bell method," but the peeing on the bed thing seems distinctly different from peeing on the doormat. I've also tried giving her a treat every time she peed or pooped outside for a couple of weeks and trying not to react at all if she peed in the apartment.

Do you guys have any advice on how to house train her? My other problem is that my boyfriend and I have different "parenting" styles. I do not want her on the bed anymore and said months ago that we should not allow her on the bed and he seems to think it's "mean" to put her in the crate while we sleep after she's been in the crate while we're at work. We have a staggered shift but she is still alone in her crate from about 10-5:30 or 6 four days a week. Some days she doesn't pee in her crate or in the house at all.
