So I do this with bigger dogs all the time. It's just very silly. Dogs who don't have much fur on their bellies work best. It doesn't hurt the dog in any way, it's not aggressive toward the dog, nor is it disciplinary in nature. It doesn't leave marks or make the skin red or anything. If it caused even the slightest bit of harm or discomfort in any way, I would never do it.
But usually, if you keep your hand close to the belly and give the lower belly/thigh area a bunch of rapid-fire pats, it makes this funny pop-pop-pop-pop-pop! sound. It can actually be pretty loud and echo-y, but the dog experiences no distress whatsoever. I can't find a good example on YouTube. But it's a funny little game I play all the time.
Anyone else do this? I've called it "Slappy Belly" and "Poppy Belly." Not sure what else to call it.
