Irrational fear of losing dog?

For Thanksgiving, I was planning on driving up to see my parents, thus taking my dog. LAST minute, plans changed, and I have to take a plane.
This means leaving my dog at home. My friend volunteered to take him to her home and watch him while I'm gone.
I am petrified. I'm not sure why, but I'm convinced he'll die, or forget about me. Not sure why, and it kills me, and I know I'll be a wreck tomorrow.
People who frequently travel, how are ways you deal with separation from your dog?
