Leaving dog in car while eating lunch?

Hello! I'm traveling up to New Hampshire from Georgia for Thanksgiving. I'm going up with my friend and my dog. On the way, we are stopping in TN for my friend to have Thanksgiving lunch with her family. I asked what we are going to do with my dog, and she suggested just leaving him in the car with blankets (it's chilly out) while we eat lunch.

I feel very uncomfortable with this. He's TERRIFIED of cars, so we give him tranquilizers for the trip. I just feel bad, leaving him in a car alone, while he's drugged and terrified. But I might be being irrational
