I have a 3 year old Maltese. He’s very social and active (walks about 2-3 miles a day). As a general rule, I leave him by myself if I’ll be gone for less than 4 hours. Otherwise, I’ll have someone sit with him. For a while when I’d leave he would howl immediately but it seemed to stop. I say seemed because I happened to check the doggy cam the other day and saw after I left he waited a few minutes and then began howling and crying for a few minutes before going to sleep. Watching other incidents when I have left it is the same-a minute or so of vocal distress (bowling barks yelps) and then he goes to sleep. Is this normal? I assume it is separation anxiety but am not sure if it is an acceptable amount as he does not destroy anything in the house or have any accidents etc. thanks!
