I took in a rescue dog almost 2 years ago. Jack Russel/chihuahua mix. Her nails were very long, starting to curl under. It took a LOT of work but she is finally comfortable having her nails trimmed.
The problem I have is her quicks are super long and never seem to recede. She takes walks on concrete several times a day.
I had the vet put her to sleep and cut the nails way back and cauterize the quicks about a year ago. The quicks however grew back with the length of the nails and I wasn’t able to maintain that length.
I clip her nails weekly, to the point of just hitting the quick and almost bleeding. Sometimes I get too short and they bleed. I then Dremel them for shaping. I often Dremel them a couple times a week hoping to get the quicks to retreat but they just don’t.
I’ve been all over Google looking for advice. Vet says she just has long quicks. Most of her nails almost or do touch the floor when she walks but the two middle front toes especially will look like talons if not trimmed weekly.
I don’t know what else to do to get more length off of them without cutting into the quicks more than I already do.
Thank you for any advice!
