About the hashrate distribution and 51% attacks
Post Body

Hello shibes!

First: The switchover went really smooth. Thanks to everyone who was involved with it :)

Now, you might have seen, that the hashrate distribution has changed quite a bit. Namely F2Pool with running over 51% of the overall network hashrate. For many of you this is a concern and I can understand that. What is important here is, that having 51% of the hashrate does not equal a 51% attack. Also, it may have been suggested that AuxPoW protects us from such an attack. While it makes it harder for a single malicious person to attack the network (as we’ve seen threats before), large pools can still acquire enough hashrate for this.

What I can say though, is that this scenario was expected. It wasn’t exactly clear what pools would implement AuxPoW right from the start and what amount of hashrate they would bring. F2Pool was there right from the start with a big chunk of hashrate. But I don’t see why they would attack the coin from which they can get additional coins for their miners. A quote from /u/pembo210 to put things into perspective:

we are now at 380GH. If they have 56%, they have about 212GH. For the last month we've had only 60GH. They could have screwed us for 2 months and they didn't. It would be multiple times harder to get us now they are only 56% compared to when they had 3x our hashrate.

We hope that over the course of the next days and weeks we'll see more pools supporting AuxPoW and therefore evening the hashrate distribution out again. Until then we keep a close eye on the network and see how we progress. Let’s give it some time to settle :)
