Apart from being an amazing story, TDA actually does a great job of showing us how the Time Lords are just a bunch of boring people who act all high and distinguished and have the power to explore all of time and space but prefer to just sit and around and, uh, 'govern' I guess.

Meanwhile The Doctor actually has a spirit for adventure and finds it a waste to have all this knowledge about the universe and the ability to free roam and not even try to have some fun. For me that's enough to satisfy the question why he ran away in the first place.
