Help with imp taming?

Howdy folks, I tried to nab me a fire imp today and for the life of me couldn't get it to work. I got me a small soul suppress stone, found an imp, beat it within an inch of its life, but when I tried using the stone by left clicking, it wouldn't do anything. My character would put his hand out but no visual effect or text. Any pointers? Thanks!
