Was running a homebrew where the players had to find and scout the bbeg and bring back as much Intel as possible. They found the location easily, even found the secondary location through good role playing. Searched the entire location (almost, missed 2 rooms but nothing in them.)
Among the loot was 2 very evil items (a hand and an eye) that the party decided to take and present to their contacts that gave them the quest.
Gave them the option of transporting them however they wanted. 2 players decided to carry them on their person, so I implemented a 5% seduction chance per day. Had they used saddle bags or a cart it wouldn't have affected them.
They spend the next 2 sessions getting back, well almost. They were one day away from meeting with their contacts when one player rolled a 2%. Lost the CHA check and became seduced and plucked out his eye and used the item. 2 other characters tried to stop him, which he took as betrayal. And ran to steel the hand from the player that had it. With a successful stealth and pickpocket check they proceeded to lop off their left hand as the other 2 characters reached the location. The new BBG splits. Party follows. BBG player uses wish to permanently make one character his loyal luitenent. And used the turn bones to jelly on the other character and kills them and escapes with their new follower.
The remaining player gets the jelly guy a resurrection and they proceeded to track the new BBG down. They spent 30 days in game trying to raise an army. The new BBG took that time to do the same and fortify his forces. The new BBG persuaded the old BBEG to be serve him with some outrageous dice rolls. Tried to even things up with an NPC.
At this point my only job is to facilitate the landscape and the provide minis as needed and basically hand out the info on the creatures each side is using. Literally did zero planning for this session or the next.
We had to pause in the middle of the fight, well not the middle the new BBG had all but won. He used his wish (recharges every 30 days) to make the NPC his loyal follower and crushed the army the players brought with them. But still had the 2 remaining players to deal with.
Not really sure what's gonna happen next. Probably set up candlekeep with new characters. Lol
