So. I don't often DM. But I have an interesting idea for a mystery-style campaign. Thing is. For it to work, I need to pair it with another adventure. Now, if I ever get this in a state where I actually feel comfortable running it, I'll likely recruit some randos, so I'd rather not give too many details away here. But let me explain.
So. The crux of this mystery will revolve around strange happenings in one particular city and depending on how early the players crack said mystery, they'll either have to hunt down or a CR8 boss or, if they take too long to solve the mystery, they'll have to face of a CR 16 monster with minions final-boss threat.
The idea is this: Pick a module that takes places mostly in/around a single city. This city will now become the place where my own adventure will take place, with the module serving as a way to get the players together, keep them where they need to be, save me time on making maps and NPCS, and give the players room to level if they need to, which they probably will all without raising too many suspicions too early.
At first, I will run the module mostly as standard with a few adjustments here and there to introduce the idea that I'll be adding my own personal touch. As the module progresses, I will start using downtime or quieter moments in the module to drop hints at my own mystery.
The idea is that if the players solve the mystery early enough, they can hunt down the CR 8 boss before it's too late. If they do, it can be treated as a fun sidequest or secondary plot and they'll continue till they finish the module.Once they beat the "main" module they'll have a little extra time to level up nip the problem in the bud. If they fail to do so, they'll then have to deal with the CR 16 final boss.
So. With all the boring contextual stuff out of the way: What do you think would be some better 5E modules to pair this with?
