Post Body

So last week, I was working with the players across both of my campaigns to review the Tasha's changes, and in one case, discuss subclasses that fit their character better than what they selected.

The fighter in one campaign was interested in the echo knight, and knowing that, I set up what could have been a spotlight moment for them to be exposed to the ability in a one-on-one concluding battle with the big bad they're currently fighting - a Morkoth.

So we get to the session, and the fighter misty steps (spell of the shield she carries), to her own surprise (in-character, this was all approved out of character) and as the morkoth panics and attempts to escape to a demiplane, the cleric had put themselves in a position to do the following as I described the spell:
"No, he fucking doesn't." *counterspells at fifth level*

Me: *blink* *blink*
Thinking hard, I said... "Okay. You counter his spell. Cool."

It undid the one-on-one I had planned, but the fighter brought him down to two points of health left, so I gave it to her and said, "How do you want to do this?"

Yes, its not rules accurate. Yes, I should have had a spellcasting ability check rolled. But it was cool enough, and the player felt badass as hell for it, and the fighter still got her cool oddities and experience and showcase moment... it worked. Everyone was happy, and talking about it.
