Start set every boss running away?

Hello all. Very new to the game and to DMing. I am just having a hard time with the mines of phandelver. Is there a reason all the bosses run away? Seems very lame. We haven't got to any yet. But I've decided I'm not going to make them run away. Anyone else feel this way?
