Tell me about your character concepts that use neat, unconventional multiclassing builds! I wanted to make a strength fighter/bard, but I couldn't really find any threads about peoples' experiences with that, so I'm asking your advice.
tldr: is fighter6/bard6 a thing?
I wanted to make a character that was a charismatic military commander, someone who was competent enough as a soldier but whose main contributions would be to inspire the team and direct the battle strategy. He might frame the strategy in relation to (made up) military history: "When General Jerkface fought the goblins in the second era, he was defeated chasing them into the hills; we need to draw them into the open" or "I know the numbers are against us, but the sagas have never described any survivors who fled from orcs: Stand and fight!" A professional soldier, not a jedi.
Reading the PHB, the battlemaster with its maneuvers sounded pretty close, but that felt too hands on for what I was picturing. The bard also seemed to fit the bill: charisma-based, inspiration dice to motivate the troops, a diverse set of skills and magics to keep even canny foes off balance. However, an army doesn't march to the tune of a lute, so I decided the best approach would be to multi-class: my battlemaster fighter/lore bard will lead us to victory! I would prioritize stats as: charisma > strength > constitution > dump stats. In fights, he would be a sword and board/heavy armor frontliner with (hopefully) lots of utility and not truly terrible damage. A sort of crowd control/buffing/mini-healing tank.
("cheese" strategy defined for the unaware: a cheesy strategy doesn't just min/max, it uses the most gimmicky method possible to win, slipping through the cracks of the rules in strong opposition to the spirit of the game.)
My goal is to end up at battlemaster fighter 6/lore bard 6 (I don't care about levels 13 at the moment). I want to avoid a super cheese levelling scheme, so my approach would either be six levels of fighter then six of bard, or alternating every level starting with fighter. My concern is about the level power curve: If I alternate, I wouldn't really have reached the first tier of notable class features until player level 6 (fighter 3/bard 3), when monsters and other players are moving into another tier. If I would go straight fighter in a rush to multi-attack then straight bard, I feel after playing a fighter for so many sessions, he should just be a fighter. Multi-classing seems more fun and interesting, and I can accept it won't be as strong, but will it be playable? How terrible is it to get multi-attack at level 9 instead of level 5? Will the barbarian and the wizard be too busy high-fiving over dead dragons to notice whether I'm contributing anything? Have I done this all wrong and you have a better way to achieve what I described? Thanks in advance.
