Making Martial Weapons more Distinct?

Post Body

I recently gave one of my new players a magical axe that deals extra 1d6 fire damage. He's replaced his longsword with it but is disappointed since they work the exact same way except with extra damage. So I'm wondering if there's a way to make martial weapons feel more unique from one another?
