Should I let my players start with Dark Gifts?

I’m starting up a new dark fantasy campaign and one of my players approached me asking about having a Dark Gift (Source: Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft). Now the entire party wants them. Is this alright?
Seems like they’re thematically cool, but balance wise they’re all over place so I was just wondering if anyone has had experience?
