The End War
Post Body

In an old farmhouse located in Ontario sits a man with long gray hair and an equally long gray beard at a computer typing away. Then comes a knock at his front door, not expecting company at this hour he wearily moved to open it when in steps a figure in red robes with matching pointed hat and carrying a long wooden staff. "Ho there, Mr. Greenwood and well met!" He says while handing over his cloak and hat. "H-hello Elminster, I wasn't expecting you today…"Will the others be joining you?" Ed asks, taken aback by the mage's sudden appearance on his doorstep. "Yes, Mordenkainen and Dalamar will be along shortly, although this time it will be no simple social gathering or exchanging of spells. Grave matters of multiversal import need to be discussed far from prying eyes and listening ears… Also, one more will be joining us tonight, so four place settings and the usual refreshments should do my good man!".

A few moments pass while Elminster puffs on his long smoking pipe, and Ed readies the dining room, then comes another knock at the door. Ed rushes to answer the door, and in comes the other two mages that usually accompany Elminster. A bald man with a neatly trimmed goatee known only as Mordenkainen enters followed closely by a black robed elven man bearing the name Dalamar the Dark. They each give Ed short and terse greetings but as ever remain polite. As the wizards three sit around the dining table exchanging greetings and pleasantries, talk quickly turns to the serious.

"Not since the Grand Conjunction have the Domains of Dread been in this much upheaval, the Mists are no longer connecting to certain worlds anymore, throwing the machinations of Dark Lords like Count Strahd, Lord Soth, and Vecna into disarray and even halted plots against each other."

"The rage of the Blood War has been given pause. The last time such an armistice occurred was the height of the Illithid Empire. The reason this time is that multiple branches of cults belonging to the various Demon Lords and Archdevils have disappeared. Were they simply killed their souls would be bound for the Abyss or the Nine Hells but they are just gone causing even Demogorgon and Asmodeus to turn their gaze from the eternal conflict of the lower planes towards the prime material."

"The struggle between Bahamut and Tiamat has spanned multiple worlds since the end of the Dawn War between the Gods and Primordials. On an especially contested battleground world of Krynn, they are known as Paladine and Takhisis, respectively. Chromatic and metallic dragons that are known to traverse the void between worlds have gone missing, and the collective prayers from their congregations have declined in volume and strength. This has drawn the attention of both deities to the degree that even on Ansolon, the Dragonarmies of Takhisis and the Knights of Solamnia have ceased their advances on each other."

"According to the factions of sigil, portals that connect to even outlying prime material planes have ceased to function without warning or explanation. Thus causing commotion in the City of Doors not seen since the great Faction War..."

"I've heard rumors from my contacts in the Spelljammer Academy and on the Rock of Bral that wildspace sailors have noticed distant stars disappearing, and spelljamming ships sent to investigate their wildspace systems never returning. The loss of vessels and their crews has been reminiscent of the Inhumman War…"

While handing out drinks, Ed, who usually is just a silent spec magical prowess, finds his curiosity getting the better of him. "Are you thinking these events are all linked in some way? If they are, in fact, connected, what in the multiverse could be powerful enough to cause all this, but it's nature be unknown?" The mages look at each other nervously, and for the first time that Ed could recall, he sees fear written across the wizard's faces. At that very moment, a flash of blue light with an intricate pattern of crisscross lines woven throughout it appears in the kitchen and outsteps a slim young man in a blue hooded cloak with white facial tattoos. "They have many names; the Ceaseless Hunger, the Butcher of Truth, the Aeons Torn, and the Promised End. But their oldest and most common name is the Eldrazi." Elminster rises to his feet and gestures to the new arrival. "And here is our last guest, Jace Beleren. Please be sure to use the front door next time, our Mr. Greenwood is unaccustomed to such… theatrics." After Elminster returns to his seat, Mordenkainen's hands tightly grip his staff till his knuckles whiten. "I thought the Gatewatch had defeated them on Zendikar and Innistrad?" Dalamar snears at Jace after the accusing question is thrust at him. Jace's eyes narrow as they glow with a bright blue light. He casts forth his hand, and a holographic illusion of blue light manifests in the center of the dining table and takes shape as he narrates "Imagine the world you reside in is a pond, and all of us are the fish that live in this pond. Standing outside this pond is a man representing the Eldrazi. The man reaches into the pond, but all the fish can perceive of the man is his hand. Should the fish manage to bite off his hand, the rest of the man resides outside of the pond, now very angry with the fish. The Eldrazi Titans, though mighty are, but appendages and their Scions and Spawn are extensions of those appendages. You must understand they are unlike any foe you've ever faced. They have not come to raid, enslave, or conquer, they have come to annihilate your world. They can not be bargained with. They can not be reasoned with. They do not feel pity, remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, ever, until every world is devoured." Ed's eyes widen with shock and horror, while Elminster is clearly more amused with the illusory display than the other two archmages. "Well, now I must say this is clearly the gravest threat the multiverse has ever faced. Forces must be gathered. Armies must be marshaled!" Mordenkainen shakes his head. "But where will they strike next? How do we strike at an enemy we can't find?" Jace dispels the illusion with a gesture. "Any mana rich world would be the first to be targeted, but honestly, even remote worlds like this one will be devoured in time." Dalamar casts a sideways glance at Jace. "If they become aware of this threat, the Dark Lords, Archfiends, and even the Gods will seek out and empower their champions across the multiverse." Elminster jumps up from his chair with a start. "Then it's decided we will find these champions and guide them to the Eldrazi while we find a permanent solution to this looming danger." With that, the four mages depart promising Ed that they will return when they have a solid plan to act on. Sitting back at his computer, all he could think of was the potential lives in danger, lives already lost, how with the coming disaster the world… No every world would need heroes.
