Different Ability Checks for different PCs

I'm curious, has anyone used a rule where depending on a characters race/background, you change how difficult the ability check is?
The main example I'm thinking of is history, a dwarf should have a better grasp on dwarfish history (in most settings) than a human, and vice versa. I've debated if I should lower the DC or grant advantage in situations like this.
