I've been going around and around in circles about what kind of shed to build now for 2 years, and I need to make a decision very soon, I'd be interested to hear what you kind people would do in our situation.
We're on an acre just out of New Plymouth. We have a 4bed attached double. And a site to build another shed/dwelling. Septic. Rainwater Tank.
Of course the bloke in me wants to just build a great big garage/workshop for myself but that's not what we need as a family. We have 4 kids, older 2 sharing and would like to give the teenager his own room, plus my partner currently has her office in the corner of one of the living areas so ideally she needs an office too.
I've thought about just getting one of those houseme type buildings, fits the brief. But I do really want a shed/workshop. So I can't use the existing as a gym / adult hangout space. I feel as this needs to be big enough to house a boat/motorhome, not that I have either but may eventually and also I think it will help with the resale value.
It needs to collect its own rainwater, as I want another tank to feed the paddocks so I'm not doing it from the main house.
We plan on getting a builder to do most of this project. Im only somewhat handy (not completely useless). Will be financing through bank. Max budget 150k.
Here's where I go round in circles... Do I build a pole shed, concrete floor, build a couple rooms inside it? maybe even a compost toilet. This seems to be my cheapest option.
Build a shed and put tiny home next to it? I can then sell the tiny home later if I don't need it.
Build a shed with a sleepout? Not worry about plumbing it to save $
Or go all out, build a habitable shed? Spend now to make money later, once kids aren't here could either rent it out or even move into and rent main house out.
I need to make a decision and each of these options seems to have it's own merit. I can't even get to a point of engaging with a builder (besides a couple of quotes from versatile) as I can't make a decision on what we actually want.
Help. 🙏
