How can I fix a button on my electronic kettle?

I hope this is ok to post here; if not, please let me a know a better place.
I have an electric kettle, and one of the buttons started working inconsistently. I'd like to repair it, instead of throwing it out.
How can I investigate the problem, and how can I make repairs? I have a multimeter from college, but I'm way out of practice with circuits.
