Item sensor to open lock

I'm sure many of you have seen http://imgur.com/gallery/vOnt5. I am looking to do something similar but instead of a touch sensor I want it to sense a small item. My office key card kind of works in the way I'm looking for but I would like to use an item that could be embedded in a worn item. Any one have an idea what kind of sensor I need or if they even exist?
