Thoughts on the meaning of this expression I had on repeat from an audiobook titled ‘The case for Dividend Growth: Investing in a post-crisis world’ by David L.Bahnsen

“Compounding for D.G.I. Means compounding the return of the underlying assets(understand) & the return of the additional shares accumulated via dividends over long periods of time(don’t understand)”

I’m not to sure what the 2nd part of this statement means, …”the return of additional shares accumulated via dividend…”, so if anyone has any ideas as to the full meaning of this and can parse it and rephrase it in a way that makes sense to me so I can continue my learning journey, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you to each and everyone one of you respondent(s).
