I hope this is the right sub to ask these questions...
I've watched Monsters Inc (MI) and Monsters University (MU) a couple times and I think I see some discrepancies...
First, in MI, Mike mentions that Sulley has been jealous of Mike's good looks since 4th grade, but in MU, they meet in college for what appears to be the first time. Is there some explanation for that?
Second, while Mike and Sulley are watching the MI commercial, the narrator says they pair each monster with a child to get the ideal scream energy. If that's the case, why in MU do all the monsters need to know many types of roars for different children if they're going to be paired with their ideal children? Furthermore, if they are paired like that then why wouldn't Mike have been assigned to children who are scared of giant eyeballs?
Third, why did Mr. Bile and the other recruits stink so bad if MI hired from MU and Fear Tech and occasionally gave auditions to current MI employees?
Fourth, for all the studying and practicing that Mike did, we never really see him get a chance to display his knowledge in a practical exam. He knows all the right answers and aces every test but Dean Hardscrabble stops him from demonstrating a shadow approach with a crackle holler, Sulley changes the settings during the last challenge in the Scare Games, and Mike goes into what appears to be a poorly made door that was 'worked on all semester' that leads not to an individual bedroom but a campsite closet for wayward children with no information in a file as to how to scare the kids properly and then he decides he's not scary and takes the Scaring Assistant role to Sulley without any more qualms. Not to mention the fact that Sulley states to Hardscrabble that Mike is the reason why Sulley scared the adults but when talking to Waternoose, says that he learned from the best gesturing towards Waternoose.
Fifth, why would Roz, who said she'd be watching these two since they left college, be more worried about that darn paperwork when he literally brought actionable information that she could verify by investigating Randall for two darn seconds?
Sixth, what children are the underwater monsters at MU and the now-banished Loch Ness monster scaring? Or are they never going to be able to scare kids? Because if they can be above water, then they don't need underwater classes.
Seventh, that poor snail dude that missed the entire semester trying to get to his first class: how did he not eat, sleep, etc. without a single faculty member or classmate assisting him in some way because it appeared like he had to run nonstop to get to class?
And eighth, why wasn't there more of a focus on the fact that the entire monster world had to change their electrical systems to handle laugh energy instead of scream energy? What would happen to all the scare alumni and frat legacies if their scaring programs are now worthless?
Imagine ExxonMobil and BP if, within the course of a year or two, based on how long it took Mike to rebuild Boo's and still have bandages on his fingers and for Boo's voice to not really change, the world stopped using fossil fuels and started using hydrogen as our main source of energy worldwide, you're telling me the millionaires and billionaires that made their money from scream energy wouldn't try to prevent that?
Or am I overthinking this?
