Before starting what is now a somewhat large public server, I had heard of people "brigading" internet communities, but I could never have imagined something like what we see on Discord where on a daily basis there are different large groups of individuals who have banded together for no purpose other than to harass random people. It only takes a few seconds to deal with when it happens, but it is emotionally exhausting to deal with every single day, and multiple times a day when traffic is high.
How did this become such a widespread problem on this platform? Why does this culture perpetuate itself? Can Discord as a service do anything to change it, or will we always be at the mercy of an endless stream of idiot teenagers teaching each other to act like this? Can they at least add some kind of filter to stop people from doing the most basic and boring trolls like coming into the room with Hitler and Goebbels usernames or pfps?
