I get it. You don't know how it happened. It's been tsunami after hurricane after earthquake. The pandemic. The economy. And you find yourself living out of your car. "Fuck," sometimes you think, "how lucky am I to have a car." And then you realize that isn't much to feel thankful for.
I understand. I really do. You go to shelters. You go to the unemployment office. But nothing seems to change. You go to libraries, just to get warm. And the people there are friendly, if a bit reserved. You know it's time to go back to the YWCA for a shower, but with the price of gas?? Well, you have to make choices.
But honestly, the library is nice. And you see that you aren't the only one in your situation. Not that there are friendships, but there is ... camaraderie? An understanding at least. One day, you are pretending to read the Wall Street Journal when another girl comes up to you. "What you doing?" she asks. "You're pretty. Get a sugar daddy."
It doesn't take much googling to find what she meant. So you make a post. And a middle aged guy with a salt-and-pepper beard responds to you. "Hey there. I'd be interested in discussing our mutual needs and wants. First meeting is public and platonic. Let me know if you are interested." So what have you got to lose?
