I folded my arms, watching as she was trussed up by the NASA operational techs. The white suits that they were wearing were blinding, not a single spec of dust on them, ready for the clean room environments that she would be practicing in.

She was the best of course. Years of careful scrutiny had gone into this mission. Congress had no idea this was part of the Space Force black budget. To the public, we'd called it the "Repopulation feasibility study", and couched it in appropriately scientific language. That's what it was of course - a scientific mission. It was a bit more - one that could change the course of humanity.

I looked outside, the clear blue skies of the Florida coastline coming into view from the secret facility we were working from, and sighed, looking at the talented, highly intelligent woman who was bound up in harnesses that kept her immobile. She was the best of her generation. PhDs from both MIT and Caltech, top of her class. Whip smart, brutally intelligent.

But that wasn't enough. She had to have the right ... physical capabilities. The rigors of space were intense. No ordinary woman could take it.
