Gwyn’s people were peaceful.
They lived on the banks of a great river, with tall mountains to their backs, and great grassy fields that stretched out towards the horizons. The fields around the village were fertile, and there was nary a year in Gwyn’s memory that they and their neighbors went hungry. The animals the village kept grew fat, and once slaughtered and smoked, their meat kept many a village folk well throughout the winter. Life was happy; the village thrived, content.
Like many of her peers, Gwyn had married young. Her husband had been a boy she had known since childhood, and while she did not love him in that wholly, utterly consuming way, they got along well enough and were fond of each other.
Gwyn conceived a month after the wedding, but her happiness was short-lived. Tragedy followed soon after. Gwyn’s husband fell from his horse one morning, and striking his head upon a stone, he never opened his eyes again. The shock of the loss cost Gwyn her child as well, and within the week, all that was left to her was an empty house.
It was a long, difficult road, but Gwyn picked herself up. She found work as a wet nurse to one of the wealthier families in the village, and comforted herself that she might someday find another husband who cared for her, and might hold her own child in her arms.
Unfortunately, while Gwyn’s people were peaceful, the newcomers that arrived by boat were not.
When conflict arose, their peace was their downfall.
The men of the village had grown fat in the years of plenty, and knew not how to protect themselves and their families from the raiders when they came. These warriors were not the wild animals they could deter with sharp sticks and fences and fire; the raiders came with their swords and ships upon the very river that had given the village life.
Dozens upon dozens of men came ashore in the dead of night, and soon the village was all but choked up with smoke from the fires. Gwyn sought to escape, terrified as she was; she ran from the screams, from the sounds of clashing metal, but could only make it so far. In her blind dash to safety, her foot caught against something unseen, and Gwyn fell.
Her world went dark.
When Gwyn woke next, she found herself in an unfamiliar room, laying upon a bed of furs. Her heart quickened in her chest, knowing that this was not her home, and before she could even begin to think about what kind of fate awaited her next—
The room’s door opened.
