One of my longtime fantasies is to be a guy who’s exclusively identified as gay but has recently been curious about girls.

In the story I’m imagining, my protagonist has already done a little exploring of the opposite sex when he was still closeted. Mostly kissing and a lot of touching. But it was awkward. There was a lot of internalized homophobia and he was just trying to pretend those gay desires didn’t exist. There was a girlfriend. And hurt feelings.

In college he came out as gay. He slept with a boy for the first time and things just clicked like they had never done before. There were hook ups. Some short-lived relationships too. A few more broken hearts. He was hot and he knew it and college boys wanted him. Little did he know the girls also wanted him.

Present day: he’s living with his boyfriend in his first apartment finishing school. And sex has gotten a little routine. Rare when it happens, and unsatisfying when it does. Some times when he fucks his boyfriend, he pretends he finishes. The boyfriend, of course, notices but neither he nor our protagonist want to address their dying sex life.

One night, he hangs out with his friend, finally taking to someone about his boyfriend and performance issues. The friend sympathizes but knows he needs to relax and escape. They end up jerking off to some straight porn and the images turn something on in his brain. He comes. A lot. For the first time in months.

This is where potential penpal enters the story. His friend encourages him to seek out a girl willing to have sex with a gay guy. “It could be a one time thing,” his friend says, encouraging him, “or a recurring friends with benefits situation.” Either way, no harm over what the boyfriend doesn’t know.

This girl from class enters the story. Someone he’s always thought was hot. Even his boyfriend had commented on how hot she is. For the first time, he notices how she notices him. Was she interested in him? Would his being gay be a turn off? Would she believe he could perform and please her in bed? His boyfriend did always say that he was oblivious anytime someone starred at him.

One day after class, anxious and excited and turned on, our protagonist waits in the hall to talk to her. About anything. “Just get to know her,” his boyfriend has encouraged him before (when he thought all he wanted was to be platonic friends with her). He’s accepted his sexual curiosity for women. His heart pounding, he realizes she could be the one to introduce him to a whole new world of sexual pleasures.
