I didn't have any interest in going home the summer after my freshman year of college. Things there were awful. My parents were in the middle of a contentious divorce, and my mom's terrible new boyfriend had started living at the house after my dad moved to his own place. The last thing I wanted for my summer was to go back to the diner where I'd worked in high school, slave away for three months, and make almost no money to take back to school with me.

So, I decided to tackle the college's massive database of summer work. Our campus was close to New York, so there were at least 20 people I knew doing the summer in the city thing. I assumed I could get something: an office job or maybe working at a hospital since I was a nursing major.

I sent out my resume to anyone I could think of, including one post that I noticed late one night before a final.

Upper West Side single parent seeking college-aged nanny for summer help with two children: 10 and 6. Must be available to work some non-traditional hours, but guaranteed at least one day off per week. Target hours 35-45. Will live in our home with us and will be asked to come on two family vacations, where you work part of the time. Salary $7500, paid however you prefer.
