King Arthur IV, called by the people 'the Old King', was beloved. Though not by all. Quietly in the dark corners and recesses of the kingdom, his enemies worked against them. Plots and schemes had failed numerous times and so as the Old King enjoyed the final years of his reign he felt very secure.
Sofia of Ravenwood was one such enemy to King Arthur. When she was a girl her mother was accused of heresy. The king's goons hauled her off and in obeisance to the High Priests of the Temple, her mother was tortured and killed. Powerless, Sofia stood in the crowd, tears pouring down her face in grief and rage as her mother was executed in barbaric fashion.
The Inquisitors had been correct - Alysanne, Sofia's mother, had been worse than just a heretic. She practised black magics and dark sorcery. Moreover, she had begun to school her daughter in her arts. After Alysanne's death, Sofia found the hidden tomes and dedicated her life to learning forbidden magic and getting her revenge.
The young woman came to a critical realization: those who tried to attack the Old King and his dynasty from without had all failed, so she must attack it from within.
Her opportunity came unexpectedly and Sofia interpreted it as a sign of good fortune. The Great Library of Torron was host to untold numbers of texts, it attracted many scholars, priests, and scribes, plus a fair share of noblemen and noblewomen who appreciated learning. Among the last category was a minor prince of the royal house. Bookish, small, and sickly, no doubt the royal court was quite relieved that Prince Joseph sat low upon the line of succession. But where most saw a pathetic example of King Arthur's bloodline, Sofia saw opportunity. In him she saw her instrument.
She stayed up for several nights and concocted her scheme.
Sofia contrived to meet Prince Joseph and the pair spoke only about knowledge and books. She shared she had expertise in herbs and botany and from there he asked if she would be willing to tutor him.
First Sofia offered him knowledge. Then she offered him friendship. Once she had his trust, her real work would begin. Sofia would use all her power, her dark lore and blood magic, to transform the minor, pathetic princeling into a true brute of a warrior. Seduction and wisdom would secure her place. She'd whisper in his ear and shape the kingdom, even guiding him to marry who she needed and getting some noblewoman huge with healthy sons and daughters. When the time was right he would sit the throne and she would have her revenge.
Thank you for reading. So, the concept here is a bit complicated, but I think it makes for some interesting scenes and possibilities until our anti-hero achieves her ends. I like the idea of the witch/sorceress being a power behind the throne, a powerful advisor, but she needs to get her partner/friend/victim onto the throne to achieve that. She must orchestrate ways to elevate his position, bit by bit until he is in control and they can reshape the kingdom the way she wants after destroying her enemies.
Martial prowess is important in a kingdom like this, so I imagined her using blood magic to transform a scrawny, weak prince into a hulking, powerful warrior that inspires men and loyalty. I do imagine that they will have a sexual relationship, perhaps even love each other in a sense, but she'll still see fit to advise him for a good marriage that will increase his chances for the throne and be sure he fathers a strong line.
Some inspirations here include darker fantasy like A Song of Ice and Fire and even things like Dark Souls or The Witcher books.
As I hope you can tell, this is a broad idea with a lot of potential avenues. I hope it interests you and would love to hear about your ideas and thoughts about it. Please reach out and share your concepts for a character and how you'd like the story to progress, as well as key kinks and limits for you.
