On a cold crisp autumn day, I had awoken from my slumber. More than a little groggy from sleeping on the ground, with what barely counted as a sleeping pad between myself and the cold ground of the rocky mountains. I didn’t care though, I had always loved this lifestyle, getting to spend as much time as I wanted in nature. I had been out in the backcountry for more than a week at this point.

I had been lucky enough to draw a once in a lifetime tag, and I planned on filling it. That was until early this morning. I was tracking this monster of a bull elk, this area was known for producing some of the largest trophy elk of anywhere on the North American continent. My friends back home were seriously jealous of this opportunity I had. I just knew one thing. This trip would be my only chance. If I didn’t fill this tag, I wouldn’t be eligible to draw it ever again in my life. I had spotted the elk that I was going to harvest from just over a quarter mile off, and had started my stalk.

That’s when I ran into her… I have no idea how she got here or why she was here, but here she was. Now she was my problem, what was I going to do with her? Would I give up the once in a lifetime hunt for her? I think I was going to have to. She was unconscious, It looked like someone dumped her there. Her clothing tattered and torn. Did she wander out here on her own? If she did, how long was she out here for, before I found her? Never Mind that now, deciding to give up on the trophy elk for today, I lifted her up and started the trek back to where my base camp was.

It took a while but I eventually got the two of us back to my camp, I set her in my sleeping bag inside the tent. ‘At least she would be warm’ I thought to myself as I began to rebuild my fire from last night.

It was about an hour after I had gotten her back to my camp and the fire was going that she emerged from the tent, more than a little confused naturally. “I found you out there” I said to her as she looked at me, as if to wonder what the actual fuck is going on? “I have no idea why you were out there but you looked more than a little worse for wear. What’s your name?” I ask, hoping that I haven’t scared this person so shitless that they’ve gone mute. Goodness knows, the rest of my time out here was going to be interesting, that’s for sure.

Hey all, I decided I’d like to play out a scenario where both of the parties are trapped in the wilderness together with no easy way out. Will these two bond? Will there be resentment between the hunter and the woman? Why is she out there to begin with? We can go all sorts of different ways with this. Were you attacked while on your own backcountry adventure? A fellow hunter? Someone that was left for dead? Or did you just want to disappear?
