Unlike a lot of my colleagues here at Providence University, I've always taken end-of-semester student evals pretty seriously. Sure, there's definitely a lot of feedback that isn't all that helpful (no, I can't make the tests open note, sorry), but some of the students really try their hardest to give me advice and feedback that will help me improve. Plus, I'm young and still pretty new to teaching (28 is still young!), so I'm not about to pass up on a chance for free advice. And also...sometimes there are some gems hidden there.

Take one of the comments I got last winter. "10/10 professor, but she'd get an 11/10 if she went on a date with me." That one had completely floored me. I still remember how red my cheeks had gotten when I'd read it! It wasn't the first less-than-appropriate 'eval' I'd gotten. No, a handful of students in the past had taken advantage of the anonymity granted by evals to flirt or hit on me. But this was the first time that a student had been bold enough to include their name on it! And...it also was the first time I kinda sorta maybe followed up on that...

I know, I know! It was super unprofessional! Dating a student is a huge taboo, and isn't something I ever saw myself doing. But...well, as embarrassing as it was to admit, he was the first guy to make a move on me in ages. And besides, he wasn't technically my student anymore by that point, and we'd always gotten along pretty well during and after class. Emphasis on after class.
