"We're sending you some help."

Francis ran a hand through his overly long hair and blinked tired eyes. His stubble scratched at the mouthpiece as he held the satellite phone to his ear. "What do you mean, help?"

"You haven't submitted any reports for months, Doctor Cohen. This is not negotiable."

"What happened to Jep wasn't my fault." He tried to concentrate, to think of what he could say to prevent this, prevent them from coming here. Human logic was becoming difficult.

"We know." The voice on the other side of the line was reassuring, understanding - pitying. He felt his blood rise. "This will be good for you, Franc. Nobody is meant to work alone in the middle of nowhere for over a year. You need company."

When the call fizzed into silence, he looked around the hangar which had once held exploration vehicles and neatly stacked supplies and laughed to himself, the humour carrying a bitter edge. Around him, dozens of eyes and even completely eyeless faces watched and waited. "It's safe." He shrugged, dropping the sat into a pouch until it rang again. The room heaved a sigh of relief and returned to a bustling marketplace within moments.

The man, if he could be called that, who had once been a biologist working the remote deserts of Asia for an oil and power company sat heavily down on a sturdy bench, mindful of his thick, sweeping tail as he did so. He watched them live and work, young and old alike. Scales, tentacles, claws, talons, and fur. All shapes and sizes and (if he was perhaps a bit unkind) levels of intellect and sapience. "I thought I could do this alone, Shushu." The rounded lump of suckers and fur rolled onto his clawed foot and pulsed comfortingly, snoring in a high-pitched tone. It had been just under two years since Doctor Jasper 'Jep' Trulle, his old partner, had discovered the white mould on their test tubes and beakers in Lab 3. The change had killed him violently and painfully but somehow Francis had survived. And now he was here, mayor of an impromptu town full of the changed. He studied and cared for them, kept order and made medicines for so many physiologies that he would have to check his books to tell you how many. Even risked the occasional tryst with one or more when they approached and he did not think it too dangerous. Yet he was still changing, still losing his connection to humanity and afraid that it would put them all in danger when he could no longer keep the humans away.

And now they were sending one.

Who are you? An experienced doctor who noticed something odd in the reports before they stopped? A research assistant eager to prove themself? The magnate funding the research's favourite child, here to spy or learn the ropes in preparation to take over when they retire? A prisoner on a work-release programme? Or perhaps someone else entirely.

What I like about this idea is that it could just as easily become a plot-based romance or adventure as a wild multi-monster orgy and either or both would be acceptable.
