Sammie Atkins wasn't the it girl at her school. She was popular enough that most people knew who she was, and she was smart enough that her teachers didn't worry about her. But she was the type who tended to just blend into the background and not to make waves. It wasn't that she didn't want people to know her, but her home life was a hard topic sometimes. Her dad had left when she was a baby, and she lived in a small mobile home with her mom. Alyssa was a floor manager at Target and a waitress at the diner around the corner. Plus she had a boyfriend who Sammie didn't like, so she wasn't home a lot. Sammie spent a lot of time at home thinking about how things could be different.

Sammie did have one secret though, which would have made her the object of everyone's fascination at school - she was secretly dating Noah Klein, one of the most popular guys on the football team. It had all started before Christmas. Noah and Sammie had been paired up in Home Economics for a project on budgeting. The teacher had gone down the class roster by birthday to assign groups - it turned out that Sammie and Noah had the same birthday and had turned 18 back in August. They'd been given a fictional family and had to account for every dollar in and every dollar out for a whole month. It was a lot of writing, and they had to meet four different times outside of school. The last time, in Sammie's room, they had kissed. It hadn't escalated that day, but their relationship had solidified. They decided to keep it secret, and six months later they were still in love.

All of this was on Sammie's mind when she got home from school to her mom's scrawled note - Work Until 11, Staying With Jeff. Home Noon Tomorrow?

Sammie sighed at the idea of another night alone. Then she got an idea. She pulled out ingredients from the pantry and sent a text to Noah - My mom ditched me for the night and I want to try a new brownie recipe I found. Want to come over, and maybe you can spend the night?
