Everyone knew that student in high school. The one who could get away with anything. The one whose family name was the final word in any disagreement or argument. Jordan was in senior year, and everyone in the school knew that his word was his father’s word. His father’s word was law. Jordan didn’t need to abuse his power, though; he just wanted to coast through this last year without any interference. Feet on the desk, video games in class, even dealing drugs inside the school…. Allegedly. Why study for college or train for a career when a cushy government job was guaranteed right out of high school?

Some teachers bit their lips, wondering what went wrong that could let a student get away with this. More experienced faculty had adjusted, simply knowing that this was how things had always been around here. Jordan wasn’t the first of his siblings to “graduate” from this high school, and he wouldn’t be the last. Four years earlier, a teacher had tried to force Jordan’s older brother to buckle down and do his work; she failed him in math. Two days later, she was walked out of the school in handcuffs after the FBI found some… questionable files on her work computer. Allegedly.

The school knew that he was only dangerous if you got in the way of his pleasure or entertainment. If everyone silently catered to him and helped make his high school experience the best it could be, his father would always donate an incredible amount of money on the last day of the year. There was only one year in the past three that had come close to not happening. Jordan had sexually assaulted two of the faculty in March, and Mr. Richardson had come very close to burning the check after the school board started talking to the police….. Allegedly, of course.

As a first year teacher in this sleepy Pennsylvania town, you can almost see the chains that this boy’s family has threaded around the entire town. How they walk on eggshells near him, and physically wince if he looks annoyed and pulls out his phone to make a call. This wasn’t what a school was supposed to be! No student should be exempt from their duties, and they shouldn’t have the power to make the school bend to their will with a text. You know this school needs you to help set it back on the right path. They need a breath of fresh air, a strong woman to rally behind.

That’s why when the student classes were distributed, you weren’t afraid. While every other teacher was looking at you as if you were given a prison sentence, you saw the name on your class roster and hardened your resolve. Jordan Richardson. You truly believed that every young mind had the potential to be sculpted into something great. That you’d earn a heartfelt email years later, thanking you for showing him the light and turning his life around. This is why you went to college to become a teacher!

My idea for this prompt was that this petite little teacher jumps into the deep end of a pool without having any idea what kind of powerful fish she’s swimming with. It’s not too long before Jordan blackmails her into servitude, humiliates her in front of the class, and knocks her up pretty early on in the school year. He gave her the warnings, but she didn’t listen. Eventually, she’s coming to school with a swollen belly in a uniform that no self-respecting education institute would allow…. Under normal circumstances, of course.
