Summer was finally coming to an end after my daughter's first year at university. In that first year, she'd made a lot of friends, and kept a few over from high school.

She spent most of the Summer giving me space, which I appreciated. The quarantine hit and I'd been working from home, hours a lot longer than I had been while working at the office, which was stressful to say the least. Finally, getting close to the beginning of the school year, she asked to have a handful of friends over for a slumber party.

There was no real reason not to. There was plenty of room in the basement for a handful of blowup mattresses and you could spend the days hanging by the pool or lounge around the house, as long as they gave me a little space in my office. Feeling guilty about not being able to spend time with my daughter over past few months, I even permitted access to the liquor cabinet, as long as she promised not to leave the property if they'd had anything to drink.

As her friends started to arrive, I greeted the first few at the door. At 6'1" and 190 lbs, I was fairly lean. My dark brown hair started to show some grey after I turned 35. Now, by 40, I had a couple small patches, but generally it still retained it darker color.
